About Us

Our Founder

Jonny Towers (Whizkin Games' founder) always loved the creative arts as a child.  He would turn his childhood stories into fun little games for his family to play.  Always curious, he wanted to explore all his different interests in the creative arts before settling on one.

Jonny went on to study Furniture and Product Design at Northumbria University.  After completing his degree, he moved back to his hometown of Hartlepool where he further developed his skills in the visual arts  as a hobby.  He struggled to find a career in the arts in Hartlepool, although he stayed committed to many personal artistic projects. He learnt how to create large-scale modernist paintings, how to create his own music, improved his skills in digital artwork, and began writing story ideas for games.

Jonny has always been an avid gamer, with a love for re-discovering the 2D games he would play as a child.  He developed an idea for a game he would enjoy playing himself, planning to one day create it, although he was unsure how he would begin.

Throughout lockdown, Jonny searched for a game engine to develop his idea on.  This is when he found the Godot engine, an open-source gaming engine perfect for producing 2D games.  After many hours following online courses, the day finally came when he understood how to program games.

Jonny realised developing computer games is the perfect way to combine his many creative interests.  He can write his own stories, create the artwork, make the music and program his own scripts.  This is the perfect avenue for him to explore his many interests, bringing it all together to create games players, and Jonny, will love to play.

After lockdown, Jonny stayed determined to continue his project, discovering lots of new skills to improve his project.  He learnt how to create and animate 3D models using Blender to make pre-rendered cutscenes, he furthered his skills using Ableton Live for music production and he gained an excellent knowledge of GDScript, the inbuilt scripting language for the Godot Engine.

Five years later, Jonny realised he had the ability and drive to finish his project and create a studio and brand to publish his own games.  He used his online pseudonym, Whizkin, to create Whizkin Games, a 2D game development studio producing retro-style games.  Jonny has the vision to enable other ambitious creators in the North East UK to gain a rewarding career in the gaming industry.
